When I arrived in Siem Reap the other day, I arranged for a car and driver on the one day I had free so that I had some freedom to visit some of the lesser known sites. The driver turned up this morning and after a little discussion as to what I had already done and had planned to do, he made a suggestion to visit some sites that he felt were worth visiting and I agreed.
A two hour drive saw us at Koh Ker which at some point back in 928AD became the Khymer capital. After a 2 hour drive, we arrived at the first temple and as I got out of the car I spotted the first landmine clearance sign. In effect, what I was walking on was a cleared minefield. As I found out later, the entire area used to be a minefield. The driver told me not to worry though because it was a month since the last mine went off. Ummm… a month? Hello!
Anyway, I stuck to the paths and managed to see quite a few of the temples in the area. Apparently a new one had recently opened up but I chose not to see that one as I would prefer a few more people trek over it before I do. Strangely enough I am attached to my limbs.
On the way back to Siem Reap, we visited Beng Malea as well which rounded off a pleasant day.
In the evening I decided that as I am now a veteran of many asian massages I would try the daddy of all… the 4 handed massage. I will admit it was a little more inclusive than I would have liked so I’m not sure I will be doing that again!
