Went to the Mekong Delta yesterday with Jon. It was his last day in Asia before heading back to London. I would have to say that the trip out to the Mekong Delta would be the thing I have liked the least. I’ve never been a prude but the tour guide was extremely inappropriate… and coming from me that really says something! A mild example being when standing in a Buddhist Temple explaining that swearing is not acceptable, I didnt need him to tell me that f*** and bl**dy were swear words. The rest of his comments were full of sexual references towards Vietnamese women. It wasnt nice.

Anyway – after a 90 minute bus ride out to the Delta we visited a temple and then jumped on a boat to go over to the main island. At the island we ate some fruit, drank some tea and listened to some strange Vietnamese singing. Following a walk through some fruit trees, we hopped into extremely precarious long boats before trying some honey tea, candied banana, ginger and peanuts.

The worst part of the trip was being put on a horse and cart. A moped came up behind the cart, spooked the horse, which in turn bolted. The driver then started whipping the horse, at which point I decided to get out and walk – as did the rest of the people in the cart. We did eventually get back on the cart but I can honestly say I wasnt happy about it.

Lunch was fish, prawns, chicken, rice paper wraps and after that we headed back to Saigon via a stop at the obligatory tourist crap… opps craft shop.

Later that evening we went out for dinner for a western meal and both had burger and chips, spent some time in the bar at my hotel before Jon headed back to his hotel to pack.

Today I am taking a chill day as I move on to Phnom Penh in Cambodia tomorrow.
